New Data Protection Regulations coming in on May 25th….

13.05.2018

Following the recent controversy about data misappropriated from Facebook, the inappropriate and illegal use of personal data is quite rightly a hot topic. You may have read about new regulations (GDPR – General Data Protection Regulation) effective from May 25th 2018 for how all businesses use and keep personal data. The security and privacy of all our clients data has always been important to us but of course we have reviewed all our procedures to make sure it’s watertight. We don’t want to hold any unnecessary information about anyone, but obviously we have to keep peoples contact details to be able to provide a service to them. And please appreciate we are also obliged by law to hold some personal data. For example, under the Anti Money Laundering Directive we are obligated to hold ID for anyone putting their property on the market with us and also for buyers once we’ve agreed their purchase of a specific property.

One of the main problems GDPR is trying to cut out is holders of data passing on customers details without their permission and even worse trying to make money of it. We never pass on clients details to anyone without their permission and, unlike many estate agents, Mervyn Smith do not accept any money for making referrals. Lots of estate agents take paybacks for recommending solicitors, surveyors, removers etc. Can I assure you Mervyn Smith absolutely do not. Of course you may well ask us to help you with quotes for all sorts of things like, say house clearance or asbestos removal, and we’re very happy to if you want us to, but we won’t take any money from the people we recommend. We only recommend people who in our experience provide a good service and get the job done.
